Amplify your voice through storytelling and drama skills. Learn about the elements of a story, tools of the actor, and performing collaboratively. Create movies using apps on iPads. Learn film production, interviewing and stop-motion animation! Use Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian language and culture to tell stories about our land and people. An engaging mix of hands-on activities, peer connections, cultural experiences, with some independent activities to do from home for the remote participants. Participants who complete the full intensive experience (3 weeks) will be eligible to receive a brand new tablet of their own to continue producing stories.

Dates: July 6-23

Registration deadline: June 19

Open for: Students entering grades 4-8. Preference given to youth from the communities of Yakutat, Ketchikan, and Juneau.

Schedule:  Mondays - Fridays (to begin on Tuesday, July 6) 1:30-5:30 pm.

In person camp for Juneau will be held at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School

Remote participation is an available option for those outside Juneau

Welcome to families will be held on Monday, July 5.

Final showcase will be live on Friday, July 23.

 

What a  typical day will look like:

Opening/Closing sessions daily will be in a large group and include sharinging and learning language and cultural songs.

 

Two class sessions daily - small group sessions with teaching artists to ground participants in the art of story, and how to discover stories from our own lives and those around us.  Participants will be able to interview Elders and others with stories to share, will reflect on traditional storytelling and stories, and will learn how to bring stories to life through performance, film production and animating visual art.  

 

Supplies:

In-person participants will have access to all necessary supplies. Program devices (iPads) will be available for participants to use for the duration of the project.  

Remote only participants will receive a camp package delivered to your home that will include all materials, devices, and supplies needed to participate. Access to the internet is necessary for participation.  

 

Equipment needs:  Equipment will be provided for in-person and remote, but remote families will need an internet connection.
