Create, explore, make, and problem solve from home with place-based, culturally relevant STEAM activities and challenges. SHI’s popular Opening the Box: STEAM Academy (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) is back and in-person for 2021. A community-based camp full of team building, cultural experiences, and fun outdoor challenges.

Dates: Two sessions: June 7-12 and June 14-19 

Registration deadline: May 21

Open for: Southeast Alaska students entering grades 6-8

Schedule: Camps in six communities, Monday-Friday 9 am-4 pm, Saturday Family Picnic 11 am-1:30 pm

  • Juneau: June 7-12
  • Sitka: June 7-12
  • Wrangell: June 7-12
  • Hoonah: June 14-19
  • Angoon: June 14-19
  • Klawock and Craig: June 14-19

 

What a  typical day will look like: Campers will experience what it means to be a STEAM professional by exploring careers in their communities. From charter fishing and hatchery tours, to healthcare and public works, students will see firsthand examples of STEAM and the people who make their communities function. Lunch will be provided and limited transportation available, depending on location.

 

Supplies:

 

  • Students will receive a kit of materials for camp including a composition notebook, whiteboard, markers, and some camp-specific materials.
